Planning application submitted for new Cheltenham school

A planning application has been made on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council for a new secondary school in Cheltenham.

The application has been submitted following detailed forecasting by Gloucestershire County Council (GCC) on the need for school places, which has shown a continuing need to increase the number of places in Cheltenham primary and secondary schools.

On Wednesday 13 December 2017,  Cabinet gave approval to establish a new 900 pupil, 11-16 place secondary school in Cheltenham.

Funding for the school was approved by Council in February 2018. Following a selection process in June 2018, the Regional Schools Commissioner announced that the preferred sponsor for the new school is Balcarras School, Cheltenham.

The school is proposed to be built on land situated at the junction of Farm Lane and Kidnappers Lane in Cheltenham.

Following a process of public engagement, Evans Jones have submitted a planning application to Gloucestershire County Council for the construction of a new Secondary School building, with a new all-weather pitch, sports playing fields, a multi-use games area, onsite car parking and other associated works.

David Jones, Head of Planning at Evans Jones commented:

"We are pleased that following an extensive public engagement process, we have submitted a planning application on behalf of Gloucestershire County Council to bring a new secondary school to Cheltenham. There is a continuing need to increase the number of secondary school places in Cheltenham and the new school will help to meet this increased demand. We look forward to receiving the planning decision and moving the project through to construction next year."

The current timescale for the opening of the new school is September 2021 (subject to planning consent) and the school will open to new Year 7 students only. The school is not expected to take children in other years groups at that time and will take a new cohort of year 7 children each September thereafter.

Members of the design team include Evans Jones (Planning Consultants); AHR (Architects); Cotswold Transport Planning and Kier Construction.
