Evans Jones has provided architectural and project management services for the third Big Sleep Hotel, which opened in Eastbourne on Friday, July 11 2008.
The hotel, formerly known as The Wish Tower Hotel, has been refurbished over the last six months, following its purchase at the end of 2007 by Cosmo Fry and Lulu Anderson, co-owners of the Big Sleep Hotel.
The Eastbourne building, overlooking the Promenade, is of a very different format to the first two Big Sleep Hotels in Cheltenham and Cardiff as it was not only already operating as a hotel, but also comprised four Victorian seafront properties.
The works required to the hotel included:
- Insertion of a new protected means of escape â this took the form of a galvanized spiral staircase, which was dropped into an existing light well.
- Re-roofing the entire building
- Updating of all plumbing and wiring
- Creation of self-contained family studios on the lower ground floor
- Creation of a DDA accessible bedroom
- Addition of a new entrance lift to ensure accessibility for all
Cosmo Fry of the Big Sleep commented: "This project has taken the Big Sleep into a different style of building. It provided Evans Jones and ourselves with the opportunity to prove that the ethos of our hotel concept can work in a range of building types. Although the building was already in use as a hotel it required a significant amount of refurbishment. Furthermore, Evans Jones had to work with an existing structure, which always brings its own challenges. Both Evans Jones and our contractors, EF Group from Hailsham, have done a fantastic job to effect such a transformation in such a short period of time."
John Everitt, a partner at Evans Jones, commented: "Having completed two refurbishment projects for the Big Sleep Hotel, we are very keen to continue our relationship with the Group and look forward to the next challenge."
