Evans Jones LLP has been selected as one of three finalists for The Citizen & Gloucestershire Echo Business Awards, under the category of Design Excellence, which is sponsored by Gloucester Quays.

The Citizen & Gloucestershire Echo Business Awards are an editorial initiative, designed to turn the spotlight on successful companies and entrepreneurs in the region. Already a highly respected and established part of the local business scene they have been attracting an increasingly high calibre of entrant as well as major league sponsors.

We are proud of the contribution Evans Jones has made to the Big Sleep Hotel in designing what has become known as a ‘retro-chic’ hotel using clean, crisp lines to enhance the sense of openness and space within the rooms, creating a fresh, stylish and uncluttered appearance.”

Judges for the Design Excellence Award are looking for a company, which has delivered not only design excellence but also designs that feature quality of materials, attention to detail and an empathetic approach to the overall environment. Furthermore the designs must have visual appeal, be comfortable to use and must deliver a significant contribution to business success.

Evans Jones LLP was approached by the Directors of the Big Sleep Hotel during early 2006 to:

• act on their behalf in securing planning approval for the conversion of a redundant 1970s office building in Cheltenham into a 62 bedroom contemporary hotel, providing low cost yet stylish accommodation, and
• provide an architectural design service that would support the owner′s strategy of creating a hotel that is modern, daring, practical, uncluttered, fresh and hip.

The design of the hotel has provided exactly what the owners set out to achieve:

• clean and simple rooms that provide the essentials needed for either the short term business user or the weekend visitor
• a stylish interior befitting a hotel with a higher star rating but at budget prices
• innovative design solutions and a vivid pallet of colours and materials
• a finished product that stands out from the crown amongst its contemporaries in the two star hotel sector
• revitalized a redundant building which was a wasted resource in the centre of the town
• brought new customers to the surrounding bars and restaurants in Cheltenham.

The winners will be announced at the Awards Presentation Dinner to be held at The Centaur, Cheltenham Racecourse on Thursday 4 October.
